RUSSELL DEVEAU Obituary

SOUTHWICK, MA - Russell L. DeVeau, affectionately known as Russ DeVeau, passed away peacefully and surrounded by family and friends on January 14, 2026, after struggling with Huntington’s Disease (HD) for the last several years.

Born on November 10, 1961, in Hartford, Connecticut, Russ lived a life defined by resilience, innovation, and a deep love for the ocean and animals. He found joy in the natural world and his cherished dog, Carmine, during his years living in Southwick and Provincetown, MA, Fort Lauderdale, FL, New York, NY and New Haven, CT.

Russ was a visionary in global strategic communications and technology, leaving a lasting legacy through his work with leading organizations. His expertise in digital transformation and innovative solutions, including his influential book on fiber optic lighting, showcased his forward-thinking spirit. Despite the challenges of Huntington’s Disease, Russ faced his diagnosis with remarkable strength and determination.

Russ’s journey with Huntington’s Disease was shared by his family. He was preceded in death by his father, Russell S. DeVeau, who lived in New Jersey at the time of his passing, and his sister, Kathie DeVeau, who lived in Mexico, both of whom succumbed to HD. Their shared experience strengthened Russ’s resolve to live with purpose, leaving a profound impact on his community and loved ones.

HD is a fatal and progressive brain disease that is often referred to as the devil’s disease and the family killer. There is no cure for HD. Russ was a patient of Baystate Hospice in Springfield, MA and chose medical aid in dying to end his life with dignity in Vermont. He believed medical aid in dying was the only way he could beat HD. Many thanks to Mur, Sharon and Margaret from the Comfort Project for their support.

Russ is survived by his brother, Greg DeVeau and his nephews, Greg DeVeau and Matthew and Jay Merchant, and cherished family-like lifelong friends, Linda and Rich Merchant, Toni Sefter and Brian Ross. His warmth and intellect will be cherished by all who knew him.

Westfield Funeral Home, 4 Princeton St, Westfield, MA 01085, is assisting the family with arrangements.  To express condolences, share memories, or photos, please visit Russ’s memorial page at www.westfieldfuneralhome.com
